Patience.....

August 31, 2016

.....these past few weeks have been difficult because I've been having Sciatica pain.  I've tried to stay off my leg as much as I can, so we haven't been able to go out and visit people.  I have still been able to cook and bake.   The pain seems to be getting better!!  I rode my bike today for the first time in 2 weeks.  It felt good!  The Dr. gave me prednisone to take for a week, and that has seemed to help take the edge off!!   Taking it easy has given me the chance to study Church History...which I love!   We have also been studying about the Atonement.  How I love my Savior!!!
This past Monday, we had our Senior dinner with President and Sister Vest.  We get to see some of the seniors we don't ever get to see because they are serving in far away areas!!!  We always have a group picture.  We are almost at our 6 month mark.    It's scarry at how fast time rushes by.  But we are loving it here, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to serve in Independence.  Our schedule allows us to attend the Kansas City Temple on a weekly basis and we are grateful for that opportunity.  Elder Tefteller and I have been asked to speak in Sacrament Meeting on September 11.  The topic:   Jesus Christ - the 2nd coming.    We are still teaching Sunday School - the 15-18 year olds.  This month we are studying covenants.  I am so grateful for the covenants I have made with my Heavenly Father.  Namely, my baptismal and temple covenants.   I was 8 when I was baptized, and although 8 year olds don't understand the great significance of being baptized, I know now, and am eternally grateful for my baptism.   Keeping my baptismal and temple covenants has been a great blessing in my life.  When I was a single mom, I knew that if I kept my temple covenants, Heavenly Father would bless me with a faithful, worthy husband.   And boy, did He bless me!   And since marrying Glenn and being sealed in the Temple, it has helped me want to be the very best I can be, so that we can be together for Eternity, with our children and grandchildren!  I love the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how it has changed and continues to change my life!  I have seen the blessings come by trying to live by it's teachings.  Especially since we have been serving missions, I see the blessings come!   We have also been told by some of our children the blessings they have been receiving in the own family since we have been serving.
Until next time---read your scriptures!!

Fall is Coming!!

August 23, 2016

Happy birthday to my first born son.  Aaron Cengiz turns 37 today.   Isn't it fun how our kids are getting so old, but we're not!!!    He and his wife, Tami, and their 5 kids live in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.

The past few weeks have been a little frustrating,,,but I'm trying to take things in stride.  No use in crying over split milk..   I have had a lot of pain with my left leg.   It's my sciatica.    We haven't gone out to make many visits....but I'm still able to cook and bake...probably because I can sit down when I need to.

My Nephew, Danny Van Wagoner came to visit us.  He was on a business trip to KC.  So we took him on Church History Tour.   We went to Far West and Adam Ondi-Ahman. Then we ended up at the Liberty Jail.    We had a great time!   And a great visit with Dan the Man.   We hadn't seem him in years!!!

 Walking down to the Valley!
 Walking to Tower Hill...
Auntie Shirl and Dan the Man!!!
Danny and Elder Tefteller on Preacher Rock.

 Danny at Far West...
 At Liberty Jail....
We took him out for some barbecue....his favorite place was Kansas City Joe's.... So I guess we'll have to go try it....We had a great time Dan....thanks for spending your day off with us.  We love you!!!

We went to the Temple today and took our Ward Missionaries with us.   We did a session, and also did some Initiatories.  Then we took the Elder's to eat after the Temple.   We took them to Corner Cafe.  Which seems to be a favorite of us Seniors.

Elder and Sister Tefteller enjoying lunch with the Elders.
Elder Duarte on the left.   He is from Veil, Colorado.   Elder Corpuz on the right is from San Francisco.   He was born in the Phillipines.   If he looks like he is 19....he is.  In fact, he had his 19th birthday about a month ago.  We love these Elder's.  They are great missionaries.

I have been doing a lot of baking and cooking.  Sugarlene's Cakery Bakery has turned into Sister T's Bakery.  It's become a part of my mission here!!!  But if you know me, I love it!!!

At Church this past Sunday, we walked into the Chapel before Church started and noticed a woman sitting on the back bench who we didn't recognize.   So we went over and started talking to her.  She started asking us about the Sacrament which was on the Program.  So Glenn and I explained it to her.  She said she was new and I thought at first she was a member...but then when she asked us about the Sacrament, we knew she wasn't.    She said she goes to the Baptist Church across the street.   She told her daughter that she wanted to try different Churches, and when she told her she was going to the Mormon Church, her daughter told her not to.   She was very sweet!!  I noticed a check she had laying on the bench next to her.   During the speakers, she leaned over and asked me if we had offering(collection).  I told her no we didn't do that in our Church.   She asked us if it was ok for her to take the Sacrament, and we told her yes.  As she was leaving, I thanked her for coming and invited her to come back.  She said, Oh I will.  The entire Sacrament Meeting was about Jesus Christ.   I was so glad.  I know people have wrong ideas what we believe.

I love this Gospel, and I'm so grateful for a loving Heavenly Father who loves us and is so patient with all His children.  I am grateful for my Savior Jesus Christ, and for His atoning sacrifice.   I am grateful for the example he taught us how to live!   I don't know if you have had a chance to watch the Church Videos about the Savior.    They have come out in the past few years.   But I highly recommend them.   The man they chose to play the Savior is incredible.  They are short videos and very worth watching.  The Gospel is true.  Joseph Smith was the first Prophet of the Restoration.   He did in fact see God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, and he translated the Book of Mormon.  I've told some of my kids that if you have a testimony of those things, NOTHING else matters.  There are a lot of things we don't understand, but that is ok with me.  I have a testimony that what I have said is true!!!!

Until next time....read your scriptures.  Much love,  The Teftellers

Senior Missionaries and the Missouri State Fair!!

Sunday, August 14, 2016

We were invited by Elder and Sister Ross to go to the Missouri State Fair.  We left 8:30 Saturday morning for Sedalia, Missouri.  It was about 75 miles from Independence.   Lucky for us, it was much cooler than it had been all week.   But it was still hot at times.   We tried to spend as much time in the shade as we could.   As you can see by the pictures below, most of us wore hats:
The Teftellers with the Ross' at the Missouri State Fair.
 Walking to the Fair....
You can see what beautiful weather we had!!   Sister Christensen taking my picture.
A 4-H girl wanting everyone to take pictures because they were having a contest with the 4-H Boys to see who could take the most pictures!!!
Glenn wanted to have his picture taken with Elder Eyring!!!  (So he thinks!!)

That's what I call "Piggerly Love!!!!!!  This was our favorite barn!!!   Someone told us that all the pigs in the barn are very well taken care of!!   They all had big huge fans blowing on them.
I of course, had to try ice cream from a Dairy in Missouri.   This was a display they had of a cow made out of butter.   I had to take the picture through a window, because it was in a refrigerated room!!!
We had Zone Conference.   It was amazing as usual!!!   A Sister Missionary painted this canvas of a tree...with the Independence Visitors Center and Temple in the back ground.   The leaves had the names of every missionary that served under President and Sister Vest.   It is beautiful!!!
If you look closely, you can see our names....
I met this sweet Sister Missionary before we both came out on our missions.  We met at a Distribution Center.   She was ahead of me in line, and the cashier asked her where she was serving her mission.   When I heard Independence, I walked up and introduced myself.  Well...we were at Zone Conference and she came up to me and reminded me of when we met.   I sent this picture to her mother.   Her mother said she even remembered me!!!  Small World!!
As we were leaving Zone Conference, these little creatures were walking in the road.
I didn't get them all in the picture...there were a ton on the right of this picture.
Elder Tefteller, and Elder and Sister Ross, ready for a fun time at the Fair.   We lasted from 10 am to
6 pm before we headed home.
I wanted to share my testimony that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God.  He saw the Father and the Son and he translated the Book of Mormon.   NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!!!!  People can say what they want, and they will, but my testimony is solid!! I may not know all the answers to all the questions that arise, but that's ok!!!   I know that we are all a part of Heavenly Fathers' Plan, that the Church of Jesus Christ is the only true Church on the face of the earth!!!!  God lives!!!
Until next time.....read your scriptures!!!   Love,  The Teftellers

Remember the old cliche'  referring to a small town:  "If you blink you'll miss it!!"   Well, that is how I am feeling about time right now.  If you blink, the day is gone....if you blink the week is gone, etc.  Time flies by so fast, but we are enjoying our Mission here in Independence, Missouri, and we value every day we have here   Because we know it will pass us by before we know it!!!  I'm excited to share some "Tender Mercies" we have had, and some of our fellow missionaries are having.
Sister Peterson, a young sister missionary, served in our ward here in Independence, until a few weeks ago when she was transferred.   We LOVE Sister Peterson!!!  She shared a few miracles that she and her companion Sister Prior had this past week.    They have been teaching the gospel to a young adult girl, who is still young enough she needs her parents permission to get baptized.  They were nearing the end of teaching her the lessons.   Their main concern was getting her father's approval.  They spoke to this young woman's mother, and she told the Sister missionaries that her husband said, if they taught his daughter all the lessons....then she could be baptized!   They were thrilled to say the least!!!
The 2nd miracle of many they have had is they were sitting on a bench in public discussing who they should see next when a young African male walked by them.   They have a goal to talk to everyone that crosses their path.   But they both had the feeling not to talk to him.   After dinner they went to an apartment building to visit a lady in their ward who is less active.    They saw the same African walk into the apartment next door.   Her companion said, "we need to go talk to him."   So they went into the apartment building and their were about 20 doors to knock on.  Not knowing which one he was in, they were drawn to an apartment where some music was heard.   They knocked and no answer, and then they knocked the 2nd time.  To their surprise, the young African man answered the door.  He told them his name was Lucky and he was visiting his sister there in Liberty, Missouri, and that he was getting ready to go to England for school..   The sisters explained their purpose and asked if they could come back tomorrow and teach him.   He said, "Can we have a lesson right now?"  So they went outside and sat on the grass and taught him the 1st discussion.  He invited them back on Wednesday.  They went over the first lesson with him and taught him briefly the 2nd and 3rd discussions.  They introduced him to the Book of Mormon.   He told them he always felt that there was more to the Bible.  It made sense to him that God would reach out to us to give us more direction.  He was amazed when they gave him a copy of the Book of Mormon.  He left last Friday for England, but they have a way to stay in contact and even skype with him.   They are also going to give his contact information to the missionaries serving where he is living in England.  We see miracles happening like this all the time in the mission.
Sister Peterson on the left, Lucky in the middle, and Sister Prior on the right.
Two perfect examples of missionaries who love the Lord and who trust in Him as they serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!!!  Miracles happen when you are obedient and trust in the Lord!!!  With Him,  ANYTHING is possible!!

Sister Tefteller in the car ready to go make visits.    I should have taken a picture of the back seat.....it was loaded with cookies.   (Next time I will!!)

We are finding that when we go out during the week, we most of the time don't find people home.   We know it's because most of them work.    We have tried evening visits...but worry about interrupting dinner.   This past week, we decided to go on Saturday.    We had the best day with the most visits we have had in a very long time!!!   Last week we knocked on 15 doors and after 14 homes with noone home, or not answering the door, we went to visit an active member.   It was nice, because they smiled and were excited to invite us in!!!!!  But last Saturday, we were able to talk to a lot of people.   Some, we could tell were uncomfortable, but it was the most friendly group we've had in awhile.   We even gave out cookies all day!   All seemed to enjoy that!  We visit a young single adult male who has serious health problems....so Elder Tefteller offered to mow his yard and he accepted.   We went by this morning, but he wasn't home and didn't leave the lawn mower out.  But we'll call him and set up a time!
The highlight of my day last Saturday is when we were driving to visit someone, and we drove by a sisters house who we have been trying to visit since we started serving March 25.  We have left cookies....a note telling her who we were.   Most of the time she was home but wouldn't answer the door.   Sister Peterson told us that she and her last companion knocked on her door and she answered, but she yelled at them and told them never to come back and slammed the door in their face.   As we drove by her home on Saturday, I noticed she was in the yard.   So I pulled over and left Elder Tefteller and the Elders in the car.  I grabbed a bag of cookies and walked back to her house.  I found her in her backyard sitting in a lawn chair talking to her friend.  She wasn't to friendly at first when I told her who I was.  She introduced me to her friend, who also happens to be her partner of 15 years.   I started asking questions about them, about how they met, their work, etc.   Then I asked her if I could come back and visit.   She hesitated, and I finally said, if I come back,, I won't talk about the Church, she look up and me and said, "You won't?   I said no.    She told me I could come back.  I gave them both a hug before I left.   My feet were not touching the ground all the way to the car.  I think I've mentioned her before and said she and I were going to be friends before we left our mission.  "Tender Mercies!!!"   Oh....and did I mention that she is a returned missionary?
I know that Heavenly Father loves ALL his children regardless of the circumstances they are in!  I am so grateful to be a part of helping further His Kingdom here on earth.   Sometimes it seems that what we are doing is so small and insignificant.  But anything any of us do to help find His "Lost Sheep" is big and very significant to Him!!!  I wear my missionary name tag proudly, and have dedicated our entire mission to go out everyday and help to try to find Heavenly Father's other children here in Missouri.
We are serving in a place where some very big things took place, and where many more big things will take place,  all of which are a part of Heavenly Father's Plan!   What a privilege it is to be serving here!!!
I am doing more and more baking and cooking.    Some of our missionary friends either work in the Mission Office all day to 5 or are on the road traveling the mission.  So we are going to have dinner here on Sunday.   Wednesday nights and Friday.  They are going to buy me a gift card to Costco to help pay for the food.   I thought that was very nice of them!!   We also have been inviting young newly married couples in our ward, and who live here in our apartment complex over for dinner.
Elder Tefteller is still not super busy with his AMA calling, but we have plenty of other things to do to stay busy.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true Church on the earth today.   How we love it.   How grateful we are to Heavenly Father for blessing us with relatively good health so we can serve a mission.  It has blessed our lives and the lives of our children!!!
UNTIL NEXT TIME:    READ YOUR SCRIPTURES!!
MUCH LOVE,
ELDER AND SISTER TEFTELLER
